IN memory of JOHN EVANS
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Evans, whose lifelong dedication to Worthing Harriers , both as an athlete and coach spanned more than six decades.
John was one of Worthing Harriers’ longest serving members, athletics was a central part of his life for over 62 years .
Competing, coaching assisting at competitions, simply offering a helping hand, or offering words of encouragement and advice to junior members, his valued dedication to the club and sport was unwavering.
John’s athletics journey started at the age of 14years, when his PE teacher recognised his natural talent . He joined Worthing Harriers , which was the beginning of his lifelong association with the club he would proudly represent for more than six decades.
As a young athlete, John excelled in the Long Jump,Triple Jump and Sprinting, before gradually discovering a passion for endurance running.
He became an accomplished marathon runner , Fell runner and enjoyed XCountry , embracing some of the country’s toughest events.
3 Forts Marathon , Isle of Wight , 7 Sisters , Punchbowl and London Marathons.
His passion for challenging terrain also included mountain races, The Ben Nevis race in 1979 and the Snowdon event.
He was a familiar competitor in the South Downs 10, and numerous XCountry league meetings, and Road races for Worthing.
John also completed the demanding Winchester to Eastbourne ‘ Long Distance Walkers event, which reflects his willingness to participate in a wide range of endurance challenges.
When John’s sons, Matthew and Simon joined the club, he found renewed enjoyment and interest in Track and Field, and returned to the disciplines that had first inspired him.
He competed in almost every event, Jumps, Throws and Track events, demonstrating his versatility and enduring love of athletics, regardless of his age.
John’s long standing commitment to the club was recognised when he was awarded his Life Membership of Worthing Harriers.
He went on to become a valued coach, working regularly with the junior multi events athletes.
His natural quiet , patient personality and coaching knowledge will be missed so much , by everyone who knew him .
His final competition came in the Sussex Masters League in the V75 Triple Jump, 2025 which proved to be a fitting reflection of a lifetime spent and remaining actively involved in the sport he loved.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with John’s family, and friends, at this sad time.
